YOU SEE ME SEEING YOU Hackney, London – June 2021
a performance exposing and disrupting urban surveillance
Co-produced with Mirei Yazawa, this live street performance examined the presence of CCTV surveillance and its role in shaping behaviour in public space.
Staged in a public square surrounded by CCTV cameras, the performance combined live action, movement and music to dramatise scenes of everyday life and draw attention to surveillance as an ongoing, lived experience. While watching the performance under the permanently watchful gaze of surveillance, the audience could experience more sensorily the physical sensation of being under continual supervision.
Performers included Mirei Yazawa, Ghost, John and the artist, with live music by Sarah Woolfenden and Stephen Arnold. The work was presented during the London Festival of Architecture 2021 and selected as a Curators’ Pick.
