WALK THROUGH A WORKHOUSE North London – June 2024
a commemorative event examining systems of discipline and erasure
This site-responsive, performative event guided participants through the footprint of a demolished Victorian workhouse in Hillside Park, engaging with the site’s layered histories of extracted labour, Victorian discipline and social control.
With performative storytelling, group walking and temporary spatial installations, participants moved between the spaces of former rooms while learning about the controlling regime of the workhouse. The event culminated at the site of the former “Dead House”, where the group participated in sharing grief and commemorating inmates whose lives of confinement have largely been erased from public memory.
This work was presented in London Festival of Architecture 2024 andLocal Stories Festival 2023.
